A Magyar Néphadsereg Színháza 1952 őszén bemutatta Edmond Rostand Cyrano de Bergerac című színművét. Szabó Sándor életének legnagyobb sikerét aratta Cyrano szerepében. A darab rendezője, Egri István évtizedekkel később így emlékezett:
„Inkább színészi, mint rendezői csemege Rostand Cyrano de Bergeracja. [...] Cyranót Szabó Sándorra osztottam. A Vígszínházban már többször rendeztem ezt a gazdag tehetségű színészt. [...] A Cyrano ebben az előadásban háromszázszor került színpadra. Ha Szabó nem távozik külföldre – némi öniróniával szólva – talán ma is menne.”

The Theatre of the Hungarian People’s Army staged Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac in Autumn 1952. Sándor Szabó achieved the biggest success of his career in the role of Cyrano. István Egri, the director, recalled the performance decades later with these words:
‘Cyrano de Bergerac by Rostand is more an actor’s pleasure than a director’s challenge (…) I cast Sándor Szabó in the leading role. In Vígszínház I had worked several times with this talented actor before. (…) Cyrano was played three hundred times in this cast. Had Szabó not left the country – to add with some sarcasm – I presume the show would still run today.’
