„A magyar balett megteremtője”, a „magyar balett Chaplinje” – csak kettő az idősebb Harangozó Gyula alakját övező állandó jelzők közül. A zseniális karaktertáncos, koreográfus, képzőművész a Magyar Királyi, majd Állami Operaház balettje fénykorának főalakja és megteremtője volt. A kivételesen elegáns, művelt és legendás humorérzékkel rendelkező Harangozó 1928-ban, szinte egyetlen este lett táncos-sztárrá, nyolc évvel később pedig megkezdte fényes koreográfusi pályafutását, melynek során, alig negyedszázad alatt, halhatatlan művek tucatjaival gazdagította a magyar és európai táncművészetet. Több változatot készített barátja, Bartók Béla táncműveire (A fából faragott királyfi, A csodálatos mandarin). Páratlanul gazdag hagyatékát, az itt látható, személyes tárgyakkal együtt fia, ifj. Harangozó Gyula táncos-koreográfus adományozta a Táncarchívumnak.

‘Founder of the Hungarian ballet’, ‘the Chaplin of the Hungarian ballet’ – only two of the epithets given to Gyula Harangozó. Character dancer of genius, choreographer, fine artists was the main figure and founder of the golden age of the ballet at the Hungarian Royal Opera, later Hungarian Opera. The exquisitely elegant, learned artist with a legendary sense of humour, became a dancer star almost overnight in 1928. Eight years later he started his career as a choreographer, and during no more than a quarter of a decade managed to enrich the Hungarian and European dance art with dozens of immortal works. He made several different choreographies on the music of his friend, Béla Bartók (The Wooden Prince, The Miraculous Mandarin). His extremely rich heritage, including the personal belongings exhibited here, were donated to the Dance Archive by the artist’s on, Gyula Harangozó Jr.
