Letter of E. G. Craig to Sándor Hevesi

A friendship between two theatre artists is always a unique phenomenon not only in the Hungarian but also in the European theatre history. When speaking about artistic friendship we could list dozens of writers, painters, musicians, but only a handful of actors and directors. The close friendship between the Hungarian Sándor Hevesi and the English Edward Gordon Craig was also preserved by some documents which ‘live on’: 83 letters are the part of the collection of the Hungarian Theatre Museum and Institute and of the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal’s “Collection Craig”.

„I still hope to be in Austria and Hungary before long... but I have not a penny in my pocket, so I am not sure which day I shall move towards Wien and Budapest. I wrote asking you which day your Theatre opened, for this reason: I thought I would arrange with American and London newspapers to write some 8 or 10 articles about Wien and Budapest theatres, and thus gain enough money to visit you both, and discuss a few questions. The American and London papers offered me such poor terms that I was offended and rejected them. After all, I suppose I am E.G.C. and can (if it's time) die - but I can't suffer impudence - nor can I travel 3rd class to Wien and Budapest. The New York Times offers me ₤ 120, for six articles, to cover 6 months (I refused this playful offer). The London "Times" offers me ₤ 50 for 5 articles: it is not a rich paper, so I have not refused it; and if I come to Wien and Budapest I will write 5 articles for this noble (but stiff) old newspaper.”
