Telepy György (1794–1885) egyike volt a vándorszínészet ezermestereinek, színpadot tervezett és alakított ki. 1834-ben megtervezte a Pesti Magyar Színház épületét. 1847-ben átépítette a kolozsvári színház színpadát, 1854-ben színpadot épített és nézőteret díszített Szabadkán. Díszletet tervezett és festett, technikai látványosságokat („ködfátyolképek”) is készített. Színészként is működött, 1837–1839-ben a Pesti Magyar Színház alapító tagja, színész és díszítmény-felvigyázó. 1839–1841 között az operaháború miatt vidéken játszott. 1841-től 1855-ig a Nemzeti Színházban működött.
„Valódi gyöngye volt a vándorszíntársulatoknak – írta Fáy András – mint festő, decorateur, gépész, építész, requisiteur, tűz-, fény- és árnyjátékos. E mellett ügyes és takarékos… (idézi Szinnyei) Sokoldalú használhatóságát nagyban emelte az, hogy azonfölül, mint egyike a jobb fordítóknak, a színpadi műsor körül is érdemeket szerzett magának.”
Károly Telepi: György Telepi
György Telepi (1794–1885) was a jack-of-all-trades of the early period of the Hungarian theatre, dominated by itinerant theatre companies who kept travelling the country. He designed and built a theatre stage, while in 1834 he made the plans for the Hungarian Theatre of Pest. In 1847 he refurbished the stage of the Kolozsvár (Cluj), while in 1854 he built a stage and decorated an auditorium in Szabadka (Subotica). But he also designed and painted sets, manufactured mechanical theatre devices (so-called ‘fog veil pictures’). He was also active as an actor, was a founding member of the Hungarian Theatre of Pest (1837–1839), where he worked both as actor and decoration supervisor. Between 1839 and 1841, because of the opera war, he played in the provinces. From 1841 to 1855 he was employed by the National Theatre.
András Fáy wrote about him:
‘He was a true gem of the itinerant troupes: a painter, decorateur, mechanist, requisiteur, fire and shadow actor. Next to this, he was very skilful and economical (…) His all-purpose usefulness was heightened by the fact that beyond all his other tasks, as one of the better translators, he gained merits also with the enrichment of the theatre programme.’
